Summer Boredom??

I am sure every parent hears these words during the summer months: "I'm bored!" Well hopefully your kids will enjoy these fun activities as much as my boys did. A few weeks ago we had homemade game day and they each got to choose 3 games to make. They came up with the game, rules etc. My youngest son (8) made up a game using legos and beads...please don't ask me to explain it to you though because I can't remember nor did I completely understand at the time, but we had fun anyway. :-) My 9 year old son wanted to make up a new chess game so I printed off a chessboard and chess pieces...and he came up with some new rules for the game. I do not know how to play chess and this was even more confusing but again we had a great time. We also made a game called shark surprise and a mini basketball hoop. I have listed a few links to get you started and get the creative juices flowing. Who knows maybe your child will come up with a game you will be playing for years to come. :-)

Homemade horseshoes - we haven't made this yet but it is on our list of things to do this summer.
Mini basketball hoop - made from cardboard, foam, straws, egg carton...my son also came up with idea instead of using tape use brad fasteners to attach the straw to the foam and egg carton
Shark Surprise - instructions for making a card game from 3x5 cards
Games and puzzles - List of homemade games to make like mancala, tic-tac toe, memory, bean bag games & lots more

Here is a list of other fun activities for kids:
Ice Excavation Activity - this requires about a day prep to freeze the ice block but it was worth it, the younger 2 spent about a hour playing with this and want to do it again
Easy waterproof windsock - we haven't made this yet but it is on the agenda for this summer

Your chess game reminds me of my children's preschool years. Their aunt, my sister-in-law, who was a reading specialist and artist would make up her own board games on poster paper and laminate them. Because she was a teacher, she always made games that taught math and reading while at the same time allowing the kids to have fun playing games. Summer does not have to be boring!!
